Pumpkin seeds are one of the richest food sources of zinc, and zinc deficiency is one of the few nutritional causes of hair fall that is genuinely common. That is the honest case for eating them — not that they regrow hair, but that they fix a gap that may be contributing.
The zinc connection
Zinc is needed for the protein synthesis and cell division that build a hair strand. When intake is low, hair moves out of the growing phase early and sheds. Vegetarian diets, heavy tea drinking with meals, and diets built mostly around refined wheat all make low zinc more likely.
A quarter cup of pumpkin seeds provides a substantial share of the daily requirement, alongside magnesium, iron and protein.
Be clear about what this will not do
If your hair fall is caused by male or female pattern baldness, thyroid disease, PCOS, iron deficiency, recent illness, or a recent pregnancy, pumpkin seeds will not reverse it. Fix the actual cause. Seeds support the process; they are not the treatment.
The other nutrients that matter more than most people think
- Iron and ferritin — the single most common cause of diffuse hair fall in women here. Ask for a ferritin test, not just haemoglobin.
- Protein — hair is made of it. Many women eat far less than they need.
- Vitamin D — widely low across Pakistan
- Thyroid function — worth testing if shedding is sudden and heavy
How to eat them
- A small handful, about 25 grams, daily
- Raw or lightly roasted, unsalted
- Sprinkle over yoghurt, salad or daliya
- Grind with other seeds and stir into milk
- Keep them in the fridge — they turn rancid in heat
What about pumpkin seed oil?
Small studies have looked at pumpkin seed oil supplements for hair growth with mildly promising results, but the evidence is limited and the doses are far higher than food. Eating the seeds is cheaper and gives you fibre and protein too.
A realistic timeline
Hair grows about a centimetre a month, and a shed hair takes around three months to be visibly replaced. Judge any change at three to four months, not three weeks. Take a photo at the parting today so you have something to compare against.
Also worth doing
- Do not tie hair tightly when wet
- Oil and massage if it suits you — the massage helps more than the oil
- Treat dandruff, as scalp inflammation worsens shedding
- Sleep, because chronic stress pushes hair into the shedding phase
